SCULPTURE STATEMENT
My approach to my artwork comes from an intuitive relationship I’ve developed with wood
over the last 40 years. My sculptures come from what was once a living entity, what’s left is the
structure or the skeleton with its vibrational memories of its history, growth patterns, and
invasions. It was then arrested in its de-composing process by me so that I could tell a story
using its structure.
That story speaks to the Web of Life that we are all a part of. It speaks to a connectivity to the
planet that we all need to feel. It speaks to the energetic creativity that is in our souls that
needs to flow through us and out into the world so that we can make this a beautiful space.
As a master carpenter of 45 years, my first work bench was given to me in the second grade.
My love affair with trees and wood has flourished ever since. Every piece of wood has its own
expression even if I have to remove layers of rotted compost from it. To me trees are beings
that are intrinsically tied and connected to the planet and us humans. The full range of human
emotions and structures can be seen and reflected in trees. Trees reconnect us to the earth
and the realms below the surface as they emerge and embrace the sky and the sun. A
metaphor for the complete human and a balanced planet. And I believe trees do this on a
visceral emotional level. There is something about the colors, patterns and textures of wood,
that move us and cannot be logically explained.
Many of my pieces are minimally sculpted and cleaned to expose their natural expression.
Other pieces come out of a more sculpted/cut concept but are then highlighted by the grain,
the wormholes, or the drying cracks. Each piece starts from a raw tree trunk. The work is done
on a variety of scales from small sculptures to crane-lifted pieces to cutting large slabs from a
tree trunk.
